Funchal Airport came into operation on 8 July, completing the archipelago’s airport services, but only after rigorous tests had been carried out into the meteorological conditions. A Dakota CS-DGA plane had been used during all these tests.
Funchal Airport has undergone several changes since its inauguration.
Funchal Airport entered into operations with a runway one thousand six hundred metres long, and, on its first commercial flight, a passenger movement was recorded of 80 arrivals and 66 departures. A gateway had finally been opened to this small island.
