The runway, with an initial length of 1600 metres, was extended to 1800 metres. This increase involved the extension of the two ends of the runway - 50 metres at heading 06, now 05, in the direction of Funchal - Machico and 150 metres at heading 24, now 23, in the direction of Machico - Funchal. The aircraft parking apron was also increased from five to nine positions.
