Another award was given to the structure built for the enlargement of the runway at Madeira Airport, the World Structural Engineering Prize. This same structure was also chosen by the Portuguese Association of Engineers as one of the top "100 Civil Engineering Works of the 20th Century".

The world award was particularly important, as this was the first time that it had been awarded to a national work, designed and implemented by Portuguese engineers.
